Contorter Porter

Ale Asylum

Madison, WI

www.aleasylum.com

ABV- 4.8%

IBU – Unavailable

I’ve been a fan of Dean Coffey’s brewing since his days at Angelic Brewing Company.   I’ve had a couple other Ale Asylum beers. My favorite is a hoppy as hell amber that bears the name Ambergeddon.

I had high hopes for Contorter Porter. I opened the bottle and poured the dark brown ale into an imperial pint glass. An inch thick, frothy beige head quickly formed.

I held the glass to my nose and found the aroma to be sweet with hints of chocolate.

However, Contorter Porter actually seems rather bland.  The malt flavors were distant and almost non-existent and were followed by a ever so slightly bitter aftertaste.

It was actually pretty disappointing.  I’ve enjoyed some of Ale Asylum’s other offerings and have been looking forward to cracking open this bottle of Contorter Porter.

The Ale Asylum website describes Contorter Porter as complex with a rich flavor and silky smooth finish. Maybe it’s just over my head or something. Maybe my tastebuds just aren’t equipped to handle the “complexity” that Contorter Porter brings to the table…who knows.

I really wanted to like this one. I took each sip with great care… I tried to find something, but all I really found was disappointment.

While I would happily recommend other Ale Asylum beers…for instance, Ambergeddon is fantastic…I’d recommend that you steer clear of Contorter Porter.

Anyway…

cheers,

Josh Frank

IPA

Stone Brewing Company

North County San Diego, CA

http://www.stonebrew.com

ABV – 6.9%

IBU- 77

I’ve personally enjoyed many of the beers I’ve tasted from Stone Brewing Company, but I never understood how they’ve garnered such a devoted following. I honestly went into this review with a much more critical eye…hoping for some flaw…but it was not to be.

Stone IPA is golden in color with a frothy white head.

It had a floral hop aroma that is intermingled with what smells a bit like toasted malt.

Stone’s IPA is crisp and satisfying. The grassy hop notes hit immediately while a subtle malty sweetness fades in behind it. The finish is bitter and leaves you longing for the next sip.

Stone’s IPA is a well-balanced ale. It’s quite tasty actually. I think now I finally understand the hype. I enjoyed the experience from first sip to last…and I think you will too. So…if you haven’t had the opportunity to try Stone IPA, what are you waiting for? Get off your butt and go get some!

Cheers.

I’m so excited I can barely contain myself.  The Great Lakes Brewfest in Racine Wisconsin is this weekend…THIS WEEKEND!!   This year it’s being held at the Racine Zoo.    I can’t wait.  This is one of my favorite events of the year.  Hanging out, sampling tons of really great beer with my dad.  Really a great time!!

It’s all thanks to the Kilties ( a drum and bag pipe group that is based in and around Racine).  They put on the Great Lakes Brewfest as one of their annual fundraisers…and they do a really nice job.  It’s always a lot of fun…lots of great  beer, good food and cool people to talk to.   Good music too. Pretty much everyone behaves themselves too.  We’ve been going up to thew Great Lakes Brewfest for the last 6 years or so…and we’ve never seen a fight or really even an argument.   The whole thing takes on the atmosphere of a really mellow frat party…something like that.    Anyway, it’s this weekend.  It actually starts up Friday night…and then is open again Saturday starting at 3pm.

Check it out at http://www.greatlakesbrewfest.com

It really is a blast!!

Maybe I’ll see you there.  If you happen to read this…and end up going on Saturday, look for a shaggy red-haired guy in a Potosi Snake Hollow IPA t-shirt…if his name is josh, you’ve found me.

Anyway, sorry for sort of a weird post, but I’m so excited, all I can think is Brewfest…and I’ve still got a few days to wait!!

Cheers…and maybe I’ll see you in Racine!

Victory Brewing Company

Downington, PA

 Hop Devil IPA

IBU – Unavailable

ABV – 6.7%

Hop Devil IPA is an amazing beer, and it’s has been a favorite of mine for quite a while. Victory makes some awesome beer…just give their Storm King Imperial Stout a try if you don’t believe me.

Hop Devil IPA is a rich golden ale. When I poured it into my tulip glass, a thick white head formed that lingered for several minutes.

The description at the Victory Brewing site says that Hop Devil is packed with whole American hop flowers, which I guess would technically make it an American Pale Ale…

The aroma was sweet with intense grassy hop tones.

Hop Devil IPA is intensely intensely hoppy with dry bitter finish. I would love to know the IBU on this ale, not that it really matters. Hop Devil is definitely a stand out among IPA’s and is easily among my top 10 IPA’s if not in my top 10 favorite beers, period.

This is one that you should definitely seek out. It is fantastic. It’s actually really awesome on draft as well if you can find it.

Cheers

Hey there everybody!!

We’re down to about three weeks from the Great Lakes Brewfest in Racine, WI (Sept 16th and 17th).  I’m bouncing off the walls with excitement…as I am every year at this time.

The Kilties really put on a fantastic brewfest.   Really a nice, safe environment.  Everyone is always really cool and we’ve never seen any fights or any of the other craziness that is often associated with lots people drinking.  It’s a blast year after year.

This year, there is a slight change.  The Great Lakes Brewfest is moving from the festival grounds it has traditionally occupied in downtown Racine to the Racine Zoo…so I’m actually really looking forward to that.

Anyway, as the anticipation is building…I just had to say something otherwise I might burst.  I just can’t wait

If you’ve never been to it before and wanna check it out, tickets are available at www.greatlakesbrewfest.com

cheers
